On a whim, I installed the PF app. It looks exactly the same. I assume there's maybe some extra security to it, but does it do anything obvious for me?

Yikes.

Um. Whenever I launch PF in my browser on my phone, it begs and pleads for me to "install the Physics Forum app". (I'm not sure the notification ever goes away on its own. It's been there for years I think)

On a whim, I did.

But if you don't know to what I refer , then I am become very alarmed.

That's just a shortcut to PF website. Technically PWA, as noted by Greg. Opens in a separate tab, and can't be viewed with other tabs. I find that inconvenient; rather, I just have PF on the speed dial on Firefox Android.
